10 years ago, Doug Poirier woke up one morning and decided he was going to run a small ice fishing tournament to raise awareness and funds for Multiple Sclerosis. Being diagnosed only a year before with Primary Progressive MS, Doug wanted to fight back and to do something to raise awareness about MS and to encourage those with disabilities to get outside and stay active. To keep up the fight!
I want to say “thank you” to our sponsors, the anglers, our volunteers, my friends and especially my family, said Poirier. Both this event and I myself have had tremendous support and I can’t say thank you enough. I must also say Thank You to Jack Link’s Beef Jerky, our number one sponsor each year…it couldn’t have happened without such an amazing sponsor.
And how did this year go? Our 10th Anniversary, was a great success. Congrats goes out to Team Tie One On – Kraig Kavanaugh and Todd Langley with a 10 Perch weight of 10.66 lbs winning them First Place and $3000 cash.
We also would like to congratulate our special contest winners especially the Pure Fishing Big Fish winners – Al Russell and David Chong who caught the tournament record biggest Perch at 1.765 lbs.
Thanks goes out to other special contest sponsors such as Cabela’s Canada, Rapala, Humminbird, HT Enterprise, Canadian Tire Keswick, Maki Baits, Sutton Home Hardware, and Big Rock Outdoors.
This tournaments’ main focus is and must remain on MS - Multiple Sclerosis. Doug Poirier was diagnosed in late 2009 with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. Doug's MS unfortunately has continued to get worse, and the fight has become harder. Year one Poirier used a cane and he now is in a wheelchair full-time. It hasn’t stopped him though. Doug continues to keep the fight going and to try and show others that life doesn’t stop just because you have a disability. I hope people will remember this tournament for all the good it has done to help fight this debilitating disease. Money raised has been donated over the years to the MS Society, York North MS Chapter (hosting yoga, support programs), to MS sufferers and their supporters and the Assistive Technologies Clinic in the MS section of Baycrest Hospital. (helping to cover costs and pay for treatments not covered by OHIP – physio in anti gravity machines, robotic exoskeleton physiotherapy, supplying environmental controls, specialty chairs and walkers, etc…
